SESTINA (1976) was composed for the oboist Nico Schaafsma who disappeared on a world-tour shortly after the piece was finished.

It was only ten years later that Schaafsma’s teacher Koen van Slogteren performed the piece for the first time.

Like the flute-piece ‘Atem’, SESTINA unfolds a motive based on name-letters, which consequently is developed in numerous interconnected variations.
